I had the privilege of first meeting little Seb when he was just a few days old and I captured some beautiful newborn portraits for his Mum and Dad along with his fur brother, Deefa. Then just when little Seb was sitting, not quite crawling, he came back in with his Mum for his mini milestone baby portraits or sitter session as it is sometimes called. This is one of my favourite stages to photograph babies!
Big blue eyes. A beautiful baby smile. Chubby little arms and wrists, dimples for knuckles and chunky thighs. These are all the gorgeous features of this roly-poly baby portraits session. What fun we had during this milestone baby portraits session.
This age is so ideal for quick, fun, relaxed studio session. Babies who are just sitting, getting ready to crawl but not quite ready, are so content to sit playing peek-a-boo, clapping hands, smiling and generally being adorable. In short, they are content to sit and be cute for the camera during their baby portraits.
Little Seb was so content and happy during his session that he modelled a few of my baby outfits I have here in the studio for my clients to use. He made for an adorable little brown bear, and the little blue denim romper was perfect for his big blue eyes! So rest assured Mums, if you aren’t sure what to dress your little one in for their portraits, I have you covered with some adorable baby outfits here in the studio for you to use.
I thought I might take this opportunity to answer some of the most common questions I get about how to prepare and when to book for this type of baby photo session.
How to Dress The Baby
When it comes to dressing your baby for their baby portraits I believe less is more. A nappy (so we can see all that glorious baby skin!) or a simple onesie are my favourites. If you have a favourite outfit, dress your little one in that to start the session and we can move towards getting down to some skin shots. There are no rules! What ever you love seeing your baby in is the perfect outfit!
If you don’t think you have anything don’t worry. I have lots of adorable little outfits for babies of this age and you can choose to use one of these.
When To Book
I call these sessions “Mini Milestone Sessions” or “Sitter Sessions”. I tell my clients to book when your baby can sit on his/her own but is not yet crawling. For most babies this is between 5 and 8 months.
What To Expect
Out of all my photo sessions, the mini milestone sitter sessions tend to be the quickest. Babies this age are so fun and engaged. They come in all smiles! They clap along when I sing. They laugh and giggle. We play peek-a-boo! But they also get tired pretty quickly! I keep this in mind when working with them and do my best to be efficient with our time! My goal is to keep your baby (and you) happy and engaged for the entire shoot!
