Stress-free family photos? Does such a thing exist? As a mother of 3, I know all too well that planning a family shoot can be stressful! In fact, some days just leaving the house with the kids looking respectable can be stressful.
What are we all going to wear? What time of the day is best? What location suits us best? How will my children behave? How can I prepare my children for this? Do I use bribery and not?
Sound familiar? My advise?

With a bit of planning and we can make your family session an amazing and stress-free experience.
In fact, I strive to make your family photo session a day that you will remember with fondness, I try to make it filled with fun, laughter, love and a little silly on the side. And definitely, stress-free.
I want you to walk away with not only timeless, beautiful photos but also having gifted your family a time to relax and be together free of distractions and stress!
When I first started my photography journey, I was taking photos of my own 3 children. This unique perspective as a mother and a photographer meant I quickly understand how to get the best out of kids. Play is a huge part of my sessions, games, adventures and lots of silly animal noises are just some of the crazy, silly things I am willing to do to get that natural, beautiful smile and laugh out of your children. Not to mention some Dad’s who might be feeling a little bit shy as well. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had Mums and Dads tell me at the end of a session how amazing it was, how stress-free, and how happy their kids were. They actually enjoyed the session!
So here are a few of my top tips for helping to create a stress-free family photo session.
1. Read My Styling Tips
I have written about what to wear for family photo shoots already and given some great tips on how to style your family. I have tips for how to style boys and girls. I believe the key to a great family session is you, your family. Not the clothes. But we still want the clothes you wear to tell a story, about who your family is.
Choose outfits that compliment each other but they don’t all need to match. You don’t want the clothes to be the star of the photos, that job is reserved for you and your family.
2. Have No Expectations
Often photos involving small kids results in the kids looking everywhere but at the camera. As a Mama myself I have learnt a few tricks along the way to get everyone looking at the camera and actually having fun. A stress free environment for parents and no need to beg the kids to give a cheesy grin.
Also, sometimes the most beautiful moments are when no one is looking at the camera, because it shows the beautiful, strong connection between your family.
2. Setting the Tone
Make having family photos an exciting event, keep it positive and light hearted. Have something fun planned for after the session. Take the kids for a well deserved ice cream and take advantage of being all dressed up and looking smart.
Not all Dads are super excited about having a camera snapping away at them, but let me reassure you, my style of photographing families relieves all this stress. You wont even notice the camera at all because you will be having too much fun. I have had many Dads arrive, very quiet and unsure and within minutes they are fully involved and having a blast with their family. This makes for more genuine smiles and fun-filled memories of the day.
3. Let Your Kids Just Be Kids
Telling a toddler, even a school aged child, to look and smile at the camera never leads to beautiful, natural smiles. The best photos are the ones that capture their true selves, real joy, pure laughter. The best way to get genuine images is to refrain from telling your children what to do and just let them be! Let them, run, play, giggl, laugh, kiss and tickle while having fun. This makes for the best photos that you will certainly love!
I will give each child the directions and games needed to get the type of photos you see in my gallery, the photos you love. For toddlers this might be as simple as playing hide and seek or making different animal noises. For older children we might go on an adventure looking for flowers or shells. For Dad’s it might be getting them to tickle and cuddle their kids.
Let me create fun moments for you to be yourselves to capture the uniqueness that already exists in your family.
