Life is so so busy and so so full! Full of busy schedules, never-ending to-do lists, and loads (so many loads!) of laundry. It can be hard to find the time for professional family photos and documenting all of life’s milestones. The years start flying by at a rapid rate, and before you know it, you are holding your first grandkid and wondering where all the time went. Recently, I have started realising just how fast it is all flying by with my eldest about the start high school!! How did this happen?!
But this rapid passage of time is exactly reason it is important to document your family at all the different stages. So you have something to look back on and remember those baby years, that gappy-toothed school kid, those long limbed teenagers.
So these seven milestones are what I consider to be some of the crucial moments in a busy families life where you should try to create some beautiful family portraits and capture the memory.
When They are Newborn
New parents have a lot on their plate during the newborn phase, and it can become a bit of a blur in later years, probably due to the intense lack of sleep! Yet, you will never want to forget the exact way your teeny baby looked in those first few months which is why you should schedule a family photo session within a couple of weeks of the birth of each child.
This stage is faster and more fleeting than any other in childhood. Gone within a few weeks your baby is quickly growing and changing at a very fast rate. Fingers and toes, eyelashes and milk pimples. These are the fleeting tiny details of your precious newborn. These are the details I want to create your beautiful heirloom images with. The deep connection and bond. The overwhelming joy you feel. I want you to relive these emotions when you look back at these memories. These are the beautiful and unique details to I want to capture in your newborn portraits.
When They are First Sitting
This is definitely one of my favourite stages, and one I love to capture. Far too quickly your tiny baby is rolling over, playing with the toes, playing peek-a-boo, smiling and giggling. Chubby thighs, soft baby ringlets, and those big baby eyes! These are the tiny details, the moments and memories I want to capture, to create, to pause for you.
This is the stage of “maximum chubbiness”, just before they start to crawl, one final moment of stillness before your baby starts to explore the world around them. It is when they are most content to sit for portraits and be cuddled and tickled.
The 1st Birthday
The 1st birthday is such a special milestone. Celebrating with family portraits or even a fun and adorable cake smash session is just so much fun. Often already walking, if not crawling all over the place, your little one is full of pure joy, cheeky smiles, belly giggles and that first taste of cake! Celebrating a 1st birthday is so special, and what better way than to celebrate with cake and some beautiful portraits so you always remember it?!
Before They Head Off to Kindergarten
The school years are a huge milestone, and they mark a definite change in family life. That big-eyed child that once looked only to you for guidance in this world will start branching out. They will start forming their own opinions and want to do things without you by their side. It can be a bittersweet transition, watching them change into their own little person which is why capturing the moment before the big change in a family photo session is so special.
When They Hit the Tween Years
Now hitting the tween and teen years is another huge milestone and transition in any family. The onset of puberty will change your not-so-little one in big ways! The physical changes from childlike to adultlike, not to mention those personality changes, are really remarkable! Make sure you mark this time when your child starts coming into their own.
When They Start High School
The beginning of high school is another heart-squeezing milestone because it begins the final chapter of childhood. This is one milestone that is fast approaching for my edlest and one I am feeling very trepidatious about. After high school, your child (& mine) will be wading into adulthood, and you will find that your parent-child bond will begin to stretch further and further apart. This bit of time should be captured so that you can always remember the way they looked before they shook off the last vestiges of childhood.
During the Final Year of School
Whatever path your child decides to take, trade school, university, or travel, you will want to take that one last family photo when they enter their final year of school. This may be the last photo that documents your initial core family before you start adding spouses and grandchildren in the mix!
What stage is your family in right now? No matter where you are at in your family journey, it is never too late to start documenting it with professional family photographs! We specialize in photographing families, so whether you are expecting your first baby, or they are in their final year of school, we would love to capture this time in your life for you.
