As Mums, too often we are missing from the frame of our family portraits. More often than not we are the ones behind the camera taking the family photos.
This is the digital age, the age where we have more access to digital media than ever before. Yet even in this age of camera rolls documenting thousands of moments of our lives, we are still so often not in the frame.
There is a plethora of other excuses we have for not stepping in front of the camera too:
- I want to lose 5 kilograms.
- I don’t have any make-up on.
- My hair isn’t done.
- The dress is not flattering.
- Life is too busy, we don’t have the time.
- Lets wait until you kids don’t have gaps in your teeth, or when you get those braces off.
- I just need to convince your Dad, because he hates having his photo taken.
- The budget just doesn’t have room for family portraits at the moment, I need to save up first.
All too often these excuses get in the way, and those family portraits never happen.
I heard a story from a friend about the ‘ghost’ in their family. The ghost was her mother. Although she had been there for every milestone, every scrape and every triumph in her children’s lives, she was never in the photos. When her adult children tried to collect photographs to present to their mother with an album of her life, the photographic evidence numbered in the single digits.
Don’t wait to have better hair, to lose weight, or have make-up on. Step into the frame. Hand over the camera. Be present in your children’s memories. Be present with your children now. Document this stage, this age, this moment of you and your most loved ones. Don’t be the ghost in the family portraits.
My Why for Being a Family Photographer
Photography has been a passion of mine since childhood. As a child I loved flipping through our family albums. As an adolescent I loved being able to express myself through what I created with my camera. As a young adult I made lots of photo books and framed “artistic” photos. As a mother, my passion for documenting all the tiny details and nuances of my babies, my growing children, led to this passion exploding.
But why did I become a Professional Portrait Photographer? As a professional photographer I have fallen in love with what this medium can capture and express for your family. I love it for my family and I want that for you as well.
This is a digital age. An age in which we have access to hundreds, even thousands of images of our families. We have an ability to capture almost every moment, every milestone of our children, our family, our lives. Yet it is also an age where we are printing fewer and fewer of these family portraits to display in our homes.
Psychologists have long known that displaying family portraits in our homes helps to raise the self esteem of children. Being able to view a family portrait on a daily basis boosts self confidence, a sense of belonging and self worth.
In fact, there is a powerful connection in the brain when you are able to touch a physical print. Photos tell us that the people in them are important, that we honour their memories.
When my late Grandmother was very ill at the end of her life, at the foot of her bed was a framed portrait of her late, beloved husband of 60 years. When she woke up and when she went to sleep, he was the first thing and the last thing my Grandma saw. On her living room wall were portraits of all of her family – 3 children, 8 grandchildren and 12 grandchildren. Her family. A sequence of digital images on a phone or a computer wouldn’t quite have the same impact.
Let me create for your family these pieces of art. Art that will be cherished for years to come. That will evoke memories, nostalgia and love. That will bring a smile to your face as you remember when your growing children were so small. That will comfort and inspire.
I believe photography is an art and your precious newborn, your beautiful baby, your adorable toddler, your shy child, these are my most precious subjects.
These are the details I want to create your beautiful heirloom photos with. The deep connection and bond. The overwhelming joy you feel. I want you to relive these emotions when you look back at these memories.
This is the purpose behind Bree Hulme Photography, to make sure you have family portraits to treasure as time goes on.
I understand it’s hard to find the time to take that important photo of your family. I capture award winning photos, that tell the true story of your family, unlike those awkwardly posed family photos with false smiles.
Imagine having beautiful family photos you will proudly hang on your wall, that capture real moments with your kids that you can share & treasure forever.
My aim is to make updating your family photos as easy as possible. Book your family portraits today.
